Episode 15: News Story
Joe: Hey, Jack. Did you catch the big news out of Turin last night?
Jack: No, man. I went out and got pissed with Jason. What happened?
Joe: Arakawa broke the goose egg for the Japanese at the Olympics. And she did it in grand fashion. She won the gold.
Jack: Man, that is a double-edged sword.
Joe: What do you mean?
Jack: Well, it is good that she won. But now this story will be all over the T.V. for about a year. We won’t be able to see anything else.
Joe: At least she is easy on the eyes.
Jack: Not my cup of tea
Joe: To each his own.
Episode 14: Directions
A) Excuse me, how can I get to Max’s Theatre.
B) O.K. just follow this road for about a mile and a half. Then you got to hang a right on 24th street. Now as soon as you make that right, you’ll see a fork in the road. You got to veer to the left. This will be Potomac Avenue. Go straight on Potomac until you get to the third traffic light. This will be where Third Avenue intersects Potomac. Look for the theatre on the corner of this intersection, you can’t miss it.
Episode 13: On Trial
In Superior Court today, Judge Michael Adams sentenced convicted murderer Douglas Phelps to 25 years in prison. Judge Adams also made it clear that there would be no possibility of parole. Phelps, who was on trial for killing shop clerk Randy Odoms, sat silently as the sentenced was handed down. The sentencing came six months after the jury reached it’s guilty verdict. The attorney for Mr. Phelps has said that they would appeal the case. The attorney went on to say that there was no smoking gun in the case and that most of the evidence was circumstantial. According to Mr. Waterson most poor defendants have a hard time hiring good lawyers. Mr. Waterson is working on the Phelp’s case pro bono. The prosecution said that they were pleased with the verdict and that justice had been done.
Episode 10: Top News Story
Paul: This whole shooting incident is being blown out of proportion (to make something small into something big)
Matt: Maybe, but Cheney should have come forward immediately (should have willingly explained what happened) after the incident to explain what happened. He kept everyone in the dark (uninformed) for too long.
Paul: He was in a no win situation (regardless of the option you choose, it will be criticized) Matt. Had he come forward sooner the Democrats would have still come after (attacked) him.
Matt: I guess my biggest problem is that this is just another example of this administration covering up (being secretive) information. I, also, have an issue with some Republicans making light of the situation (not taking the situation seriously).
Episode 9: Business News Dictation
Marx Financial is merging with the Lincoln Group in a multi-billion dollar deal. The merger between the two financial giants is expected to be finalized in the next six months. In announcing the merger, Marx Financial CEO Doug Waterson said that the deal would be benefical to stockholders of both companies. With Marx Financial raking in (making, earning) 450 million dollars last year and the Lincoln Group pulling in 375 million dollars, the future prospects look bright (look good). The deal is expected to rally (cause the market to go up) the market when trading opens in half and hour. It is safe to say that the merger will allow the companies to corner the financial service market (control most of the market share).
Episode 8: Where’s The Homework
Jake: Oh man I forgot to do my homework.
Mr. Thomas: Jake can you hand in (submit) your homework?
Jake: I don’t have it.
Mr. Thomas: What? I told you the first day of class that doing homework was an absolute must. I think I was clear on the homwork policy. It needs to be done everyday, no ifs, ands or buts about it. (no excuses)
Jake: Look Mr. Thomas, it slipped my mind (forgot). Lately, I have been really busy with work, soccer practice, and my other club activities. I think I may have bitten off more that I can chew (to do more than I can handle). Can you please let me slide this time (give me another chance).
Mr. Thomas: I don’t have time to listen to your sob story ( a story someone tells when they are looking for sympathy) ok. If you think that you can just coast ( do well without working hard) in this class, you are dead wrong (completely incorrect).
Jake: It won’t happen again.
Episode 5:
Dave: Can you believe the outrage over the publishing of the Prophet Mohammed cartoons?
John: I can say why folks are up in arms, but I don’t condone the violence.
Dave: Well, I believe that the press has the right to print whatever they want to print.
John: Yeah, it would be nice to do something tasteful, don’t you think?
Dave: I can see where you are coming from, and the European media did add fuel to the fire by republishing the images.
John: Yeah, all I’m saying is that someone, somewhere should have though things through before they printed this.
Dave: Anyway, mate I got to get going to Johnny’s class. He get’s pissed off when people come in late.
John: Alright, I’ll catch you later.
